ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A well-known arm wrestler was arrested Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage girl in 2010.
In December 2008, Joseph Cordova made an appearance on KRQE News 13’s morning show to plug his passion: arm wrestling.
On Friday Cordova, 31, appeared before a judge on allegations he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl whom he was coaching in 2010.
Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies say the teen temporarily lived with Cordova and his then-girlfriend in a South Valley home so the teen could focus on training before a big arm-wrestling competition.
“I think there was probably a level of trust there,” Deputy Aaron Williamson said. “A lot of times, we feel very comfortable with the people that are working with our kids.”
It’s at that home the victim says her relationship with Cordova escalated from a friendly one to kissing to much more. The teen told investigators she quit arm wrestling after that competition because of a “deep hatred for Cordova.”
She also told investigators she didn’t feel right about their relationship but was scared to say ‘no’ because he was bigger and older than her.
Officers say, the victim didn’t tell her parents until last November.
“A lot of times we don’t get disclosure until the individual gets older,” Williamson said. “There’s going to be multiple factors that play into that. Fear, afraid of getting into trouble, various different reasons.”
When Cordova came in to talk with officers, they say he didn’t admit much but said everything that happened was consensual.
Cordova’s father told News 13 he’s shocked by the allegations against his son and that he had just learned of them Thursday.
Cordova is being held on $75,000 cash or surety bond.
Sheriff’s deputies say they don’t believe there are any other victims, but ask anyone with information on the case to contact investigators at (505) 314-0138. ”
