VIDEOS: Facebook Fraud, The Problem With Facebook

Veritasium is an educational science channel on YouTube created by Derek Muller. Facebook’s revenue is based on fake likes. This problem concerns everyone who uses facebook, especially those who try to promote something on facebook.

Facebook Fraud

Evidence Facebook’s revenue is based on fake likes.
My first vid on the problem with Facebook: http://bit.ly/1dXudqY
I know first-hand that Facebook’s advertising model is deeply flawed. When I paid to promote my page I gained 80,000 followers in developing countries who didn’t care about Veritasium (but I wasn’t aware of this at the time). They drove my reach and engagement numbers down, basically rendering the page useless. I am not the only one who has experienced this. Rory Cellan-Jones had the same luck with Virtual Bagel:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-…

The US Department of State spent $630,000 to acquire 2 million page likes and then realized only 2% were engaged.http://wapo.st/1glcyZo

I thought I would demonstrate that the same thing is still happening now by creating Virtual Cat (http://www.facebook.com/MyVirtualCat). I was surprised to discover something worse – false likes are coming from everywhere, including Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia. So even those carefully targeting their campaigns are likely being duped into spending real money on fake followers. Then when they try to reach their followers they have to pay again.

And it’s possible to be a victim of fake likes without even advertising. Pages that end up on Facebook’s “International Suggested Pages” are also easy targets for click-farms seeking to diversify their likes. http://tnw.co/NsflrC

The Problem With Facebook

The problem is much worse than I originally thought.
Facebook is a complex ecosystem of individuals, creators, brands and advertisers, but I don’t think it serves any of these groups particularly well because its top priority is to make money. Now, I don’t think making money is a bad thing, in fact I hope to make some myself. The problem is the only way Facebook has found to make money is by treating all entities on the site as advertisers and charging them to share their content.

This business plan backfires because 1) not all entities ARE advertisers and 2) it was the content from these people, specifically friends, family, and creators that made the site worth visiting in the first place. Now the incentives are misaligned:
– individuals want to see great content, but they are now seeing more paid content and organically shared content which appeals to the lowest common denominator (babies, weddings, and banal memes)
– creators want to reach fans but their posts are being throttled to force them to pay to be seen
– brands and advertisers have to pay once to advertise their page on Facebook, and then pay again to reach the people who have already liked their page. Plus Facebook is not a place where people generally go to buy things.

Facebook stands in contrast to other social media like Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram where all content is shared with all followers.

VIDEOS: Neil Pickup about Bert Whitfield and BAF “Enter The Lions Den”

British Armwrestling Federation (BAF)
British Armwrestling Federation (BAF)

Neil Pickup – facebook:

” It funny how your approach to things changes as you get older, yesterday I Pulled the BAF “Enter The Lions Den” Professional New Year Cup of Armwrestling & was able to Win the Overall Tournament Champion Title, literally without having to get outta Second Gear. I’d actually trained my Arms, Hands & Wrists at medium intensity on Friday night BUT FAR MORE SIGNIFICANTLY I’m just about to train them AGAIN at 4pm today !!! THATS RIGHT, the Day after the event. I remember watching the late, great Bert Whitfield at an event when I was a Young Puller & he appeared to Pull in a measured manner, staying well within himself & his elastic limits, after he eventually lost, in a match it seemed as though he was capable of Winning, I asked him WHY he had held back !? & he answered “when ya get to this stage of your career you sometimes Pull to ensure that you can Pull again tomorrow & NOT JUST to Win on that particular Day !!!” I remember at the time thinkin W.T.F !!? HOW’S THAT WORK !!? you’ve lost then haven’t ya !!! yesterday for the first time, I really understood what that LEGENDARY Armwrestler had meant for the first time ! BUT that’s why he was Bert Whitfield & I am just me. Time to head into “THE FREAKSHOP” feeling NO PAIN the Day after having WON the NYC Champion of the Champions Title. THANKS MR. WHITFIELD !!! R.I.P. Sir. ”

INTERVIEW: Ivan Portela │ by Nino Salvatore Fernandez

Many thanks to Nino Salvatore Fernandez for this interview with Ivan Portela.
This is just a fragment, read the full interview on: spainarmwrestler.blogspot.com.es

1 What time do you train arm wrestling and how did you get so interested in this?

I train two to three days a week, about 4 hours. My hobby is due to my father. From when I was small, I have been interested in the sport of arm wrestling, my father found it funny that so small I arm wrestled his friends and won . One day I met Miguel Angel Duran. Then I started this sport with more vigor and I would like to thank Miguel today.

2 Who is the Armwrestler that you most admire and why?

In Spain without doubt it is my great friend and mentor “Quinito” Joaquín Garrido Laso. And it would be John Brzenk internationally.

3 What plans do you have within your future life and what are your aspirations for this sport?

To ensure that this sport, will be recognized as such…as a sport. AND as an Olympic recognized sport too.
And also, to possibly renew in some way the titles from arm wrestling… this would not be a bad thing

4 What other sports do you practice?

Currently I only train as a bodybuilder and practice Armwrestling . Before I did a little bit of everything, boxing more than anything but is a very complete sport,…

5 What advice do you have for young people and children that want to start?

I would say that they have the get up and go to do the sport, that there are no secrets, you win more the better trained you are. Everything will happen, every effort will be rewarded. As they say: Respect everybody and do not be afraid of anyone.

6 In addition to this sport discipline, what plans you have for your future?
…….

7 What do you think is the best technique within arm wrestling?

I don’t think that any technique is better than another but the best mode is its use. I remember that I have always been told, you can never win a world only by pulling from the inside.

8 What has been your biggest disappointment in the sport?

We do not have the same coverage in the media as other sports. There is currently no aid for promoters, city councils, etc…
