Iain Valliere broke his arm with a spiral-fracture (the length of the arm) while going against Devon Larratt in 2012. Devon was armwrestling about 100 people at a fitness convention in Ottawa, raising money / charity for a children’s hospital, Iain Valliere was no. 35 or something like that.

6 Weeks after the surgery, Iain Valliere made some x-rays and the bone was well fused so he started going back to the gym and just doing some light exercises, mainly machines. Within about 3 months after the surgery his arm size was about back to normal. Read more here  ► Interview with Iain Valliere

Whangarei Hospital, New Zealand

Definition of Stupidity: Patient vs. Staff = Broken Arm in the Hospital :)

Whangarei Hospital, New Zealand │ Image Source: Google

According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of stupidity = Behaviour that shows a lack of good sense or judgement. 🙂

I believe this definition fits like a glove what happened in the Whangarei Hospital, New Zealand. A patient, who was already in the hospital, challenged a staff member to an armwrestling match and he ended up with a fractured humerus. Read more about it on nzherald.co.nz ► Arm wrestling ban after patient’s arm broken

Below you can read an answer given by John Brzenk regarding arm breaking. Although John’s answer is from many years ago, I believe it is still valid today.

John Brzenk – armwrestling.com: ” I personally have yet to be pulling against someone that has broken their arm while I was pulling with them. The reason maybe the people I pull against are veteran armwrestlers, that have been in the sport many years, and if their not. I’m normally very cautious to keep them from positioning their arm and bodies in a position where they could hurt themselves. Breaks are not common once you have conditioned your body for armwrestling. I believe the danger exists when you have a stronger then average person beginning in the sport with their weight lifting muscles being much stronger than the bone. I have been around maybe half a dozen breaks in the 20 or so years I have been in the sport. I have been hesitant at times because of this exposure, but then I ask myself what in life doesn’t come with some sort of risk? For me the excitement of competition far outweighs the very small recoverable risk involved. This is from someone that has been on the receiving end. I healed. So will your friend probably stronger than he was before the break. You didn’t break his arm. He did it to himself you just happened to be the one gripped up with him at the time. Hope you can get over it. “

Ryan Bowen about Ben Ross arm break

VIDEO: NRL Footyshow Arm Break: Armwrestlers Response

It seems armwrestling gets the most attention only when something bad happens… People like to watch this type of videos for the shock value…  The video was all over the news in Australia.
I have to say I saw the video with the arm break posted on facebook but I didn’t watch it, I usually don’t watch such videos, because it is messing with my head.
If you really want to watch the video with the arm break, you will find a link to it below the video with the Armwrestlers Response (in the same article there are videos with what the parties involved, Ben Ross and Wendell Sailor, said after the unfortunate event).
I told Ryan Bowen, who made the armwrestlers video response, a suggestion: next time he should make a not so serious / happier video, even if we talk about a serious injury. People should understand that shit happens in all sports, and there are many more sports which are far more dangerous than armwrestling, where you can even lose your life, and people still do them. 🙂

bodybuilder injures his arm

VIDEO: Bodybuilder injures his arm armwrestling. Video 18 + │1 May 2013, Kostanay, Kazakhstan

Interesting fact: In Sweden the armwrestling sport is called Armbrytning.

Armbrytning translated word-for-word means arm breaking: brytning = breaking.

Of course this is used in the figurative sense, it is like saying: armwrestle me and I will break your arm. 🙂

UPDATE: It was an unfortunate event, the bodybuilder is now in the hospital, he has a tendon rupture. The arm was not broken.

John Brzenk about arm breaking and Magnus Samuelsson – armwrestling.com:

From Mike G.: ” Hello John, I am very impressed with your ability to beat men quickly that are much bigger and seemingly stronger than you. I was wondering what you thought of the armwrestling match in 1995, I believe, at the Worlds Strongest Man preliminary heat. It involved a European armwrestling champion (Magnus Sammuelson) and a powerlifter type Nathan “megaman” Jones. Obviously Jones had no technique and a big ego. He seemed to break his own arm as much as anything. What do you think of Sammuelson’s ability? Have you ever pulled him? “
John Brzenk: ” I’m sorry Mike I haven’t had a chance to see the match your asking about, so I can’t comment on the technique used, or lack of it. But I would agree that injuries are more common with individuals that are strong enough to hurt themselves. In my experience weight lifters or strongmen in general that have developed great power from areas other than armwrestling, can easily pull, or break something before the average Joe would beginning in the sport. That’s why a well conditioned weight lifter should start armwrestling slowly. With a little less intensity then they are probably used to exerting. This will condition their body to this unusual motion. The more time spent on the table, the less chance these injuries will occur. As far as your question about Magnus Sammuelsons ability as an armwrestler, I don’t know. We have never met but my guess would be that with the power and speed he posses it wouldn’t take much to train that strength to work for him on the armwrestling table. “

Magnus Vs Megaman Arm Wrestle

Uploaded on 6 Aug 2006

Magnus takes on Nathan Jones AKA megaman.

This is from his Swedish Power DVD. I got it from Amazon. Don’t think it is there anymore. I don’t want this to get taken down for copywright reasons, as this seems to be happening to my older videos. So yeah… If you like it, go buy it. He talks about his training, nutrition and past events. One of the few “training” DVDs worth money.
