Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF; previously SportAccord) is the umbrella organisation for all (Olympic and non-Olympic) international sports federations as well as organisers of multi-sports games and sport-related international associations. GAISF is an international sport organisation with 92 full members (international sports federations governing specific sports worldwide) and 17 associate members (organisations which conduct activities closely related to the international sports federations).” More info ► wikipedia.org

WORLD ARMWRESTLING FEDERATION RECOMMENDED FOR FULL GAISF MEMBERSHIP

  • WAF could become first Observer to complete journey to full GAISF membership
  • World Union of Olympic Cities recommended for Associate Membership
  • RLIF and FIP become 8th and 9th Observers

(Lausanne. 30th January 2018) The World Armwrestling Federation (WAF) has been recommended for Full Membership of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF).

The decision was taken by the GAISF Council, which met in Lausanne, and will be considered for approval by a vote of members at the GAISF General Assembly in Bangkok in April 2018.

The World Armwrestling Federation is led by President Assen Hadjitodorov and was founded in 1977. Its 2018 world championships will take place in Antalya, Turkey later this year.

WAF was among the first group of International Federations (IFs) granted GAISF Observer Status in October 2017. It has subsequently succeeded in achieving the necessary criteria and, if successful, will become the first to complete the journey to Full Membership.

The General Assembly will also vote on a proposal to grant Associate Membership to the World Union of Olympic Cities, which ensures a continued Olympic legacy by uniting former host cities. The City of Lausanne and its mayor chair this Union, which was created in 2002.

Finally, GAISF’s Council have approved applications from the Rugby League International Federation (RFIL) and International Padel Federation (FIP) for Observer Status.

RLIF and FIP become the eighth and ninth Observer of GAISF and, like the others, will now embark on a rigorous process of assessment and verification which – for those which satisfy all criteria – may lead to Full Membership. This requires resolving any perceived rivalry issues with existing members before going through a vote at a future GAISF General Assembly.

Observer Status allows IFs to be part of the GAISF network, take part in activities including the annual IF Forum and to attend General Assembly, although they have no vote. This status is valid for two years.

Patrick Baumann, President of GAISF said:

“The Council’s decision to recommend WAF for Full Membership is an important milestone for GAISF as they would become the first IF to complete the journey from Observer to Member.

“It is concrete evidence that the pathway established through the hard work of our Membership Commission, chaired by Mr. Antonio Espinos along with Vice Presidents Dr. Raffaele Chiulli (President of ARISF) and Mr. Stephan Fox (President of AIMS), can be followed by determined IFs and that it works well for both the Federation and GAISF’s entire membership.”

Membership Commission chairman Mr. Antonio Espinos said:

“Both RLIF and FIP are to be congratulated on achieving Observer Status and their inclusion is a further example of the diversity of the world sporting family which GAISF represents.

“We wish them every success and encourage them to now work directly with our existing members to resolve any open issues and learn from all of them, so that in due course they may comply with all requirements for being recommended for full membership.”

GAISF represents 109 International Federations and other sports bodies, and acts as a forum for the exchange of knowledge, ideas and best practice, providing a range of services in key areas such as anti-doping. GAISF works closely with the International Olympic Committee and their vision and values are entirely aligned.

Keep in mind this important fragment from the WAF article:

” WAF applied for full membership at SportAccord with 52 members from which only 28 where considered eligible, recognized members by National Sport Authorities. According to the current rules we needed 40. This statute would had given us the possibility to obtain the other requested national recognitions easier with the SportAccord Membership (Provisional).

By 2% of the votes, the proposal of the SportAccord Council haven’t obtained the 2/3 majority needed to made statuary changes.

At the moment WAF have the Observer status in SportAccord General Assembly and our application is open. We keep on working to collect the missing 12 National Recognitions. “

That fragment is very important because we have a strange situation:

1. Marius Vizer – the President of SportAccord is from Romania (UPDATE: PRESIDENT VIZER RESIGNS – 31 May 2015 │ Mr. Patrick Baumann is the new SportAccord President – FIBA boss Baumann chosen as new SportAccord president – 22 April 2016),

2. Mircea Simionescu-Simicel (the General Secretary of WAF) is also from Romania,

3. In Romania armwrestling is not recognized as a sport (UPDATE: This article was first published in May 2015. In July 2016, after 14 months, armwrestling received the National Recognition as a sport in Romania, but there is still no Armwrestling Federation in Romania). There is no Armwrestling Federation in Romania, it is a country where the sport of Armwrestling is missing the National Recognition.

4. The conflict between WAF and Alexander Filimonov sure doesn’t help, considering that in the next 3 years  the SportAccord Convention will take place in Russia, see ► VIDEO: SportAccord Convention 2016: Sochi, 2017: Moscow, 2018: Saint Petersburg (UPDATE: After some changes, the SportAccord Convention 2016 took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the SportAccord Convention 2017 should take place in Aarhus, Denmark. Press release 24.04.2015

It is a great recognition for World Armwrestling Federation (WAF) at the SportAccord Convention, Sochi – Russia, 19-24 April 2015.

For the first time in the history of armwrestling WAF was represented, presented and recognized by SportAccord General Assembly in front of the President of International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, in front of the President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, in front of the President of FIFA Sepp Blatter and in front of 109 International Federations, members of SportAccord.
Due to our application situation, SportAccord Council proposed to add a point in the constitution in order for WAF to receive the Provisional Member status.

WAF applied for full membership at SportAccord with 52 members from which only 28 where considered eligible, recognized members by National Sport Authorities.

WAF attended many important meetings with major sport organizations, international sport federations (members of SportAccord), national governmental sport authorities, national Olympic committees, media partners and other guests.

One of the most important was the meeting with the organizer of the World Combat Games, Mrs. Lisa Allan with who we started the discussions to include armwrestling into the program of 2018 World Combat Games in Lima-Peru. We have big chance to successfully pass all the requirements.

Another big achievement was the meeting with the President of International University Sports Federation (FISU), Mr. Claude-Louis GALLIEN. We received information and advice on how to apply and achieve FISU membership and we started the preliminary discussions to organize the 2017 World Armwrestling Students Championship under the umbrella and patronage of FISU.

WAF President and WAF General Secretary had an official meeting with SportAccord President Mr. Marius Vizer. We discussed the solutions to the current situation and he assured us of his full support.

WAF had an exhibition space together with Malaysia Tourism Agency.

WAF represented our sport, the stand where we set up a table was highly appreciated by our meeting guests, organizers, delegates, management of major international federations, media, authorities and visitors.

President of SportAccord Mr. Marius Vizer itself stopped to our armwrestling table and had a more casual meeting with WAF President and General Secretary.

For the first time all those major sport organizations met World Armwrestling Federation, acknowledge about our sport and for sure will support us for next General Assembly. They all enjoyed our sport. We received many encouragements to go further and recognize this sport at the highest international level.

Engin Terzi ► Armwrestling John – Engin (06 January 2014):

In Turkey we just had a boys only junior competition. Near 700 junior athletes have competed. Pro armwrestling serves only to organizers and elite pullers. Sport Accord recognition will be the greatest step ever in our sport.

Once we will be recognized by the IOC (sport accord) in April 2015, we will be much stronger even though we will not be in the Olympic games (yet).

http://zindegenclik.org/zinde-genclik-turkiye-bilek-guresi-yarismasinin-kupa-ve-madalya-kazananlarini-acikladi/

According to the official organizer near 15.000 juniors competed the qualifications to be qualified the finals that had 700 competitors.

I am the person who is training the trainers of the clubs that are competing from all over the nation. Just came from a training course where i taught the trainers who became 2. level trainer. These events are organised by the Federation in Turkey but financed by Education Company that has representatives all over the nation. They don’t make single coin by organizing these events, actually they spent money. They only care to keep the children away from bad habits and raise healthy and strong generations mentally, physically and spiritually. It’s name is ASFA EGITIM KURUMLARI. They are finding the junior pullers from all over the nation by searching the schools and teaching them what i teach them.

From the last event i realise that there are tons of potentials out there and they are just there to be discovered.

Igor Mazurenko about ARMWRESTLING and OLYMPIC GAMES

Igor Mazurenko - World Armwrestling Championship (WAC) Founder │ Image Source: PAL - Professional Armwrestling League

” DOES ARMWRESTLING REALLY NEED OLYMPIC GAMES ?

These days, especially in the Internet, there is a very active dispute, concerning the question wether armwrestling will be an Olympic sports discipline and what it is lacking for this.

Dear friends, after much thought, I decided to write an article about the future of our sport, about what is important and what is not worth of paying attention and should just be let go and be not raised up again and again. Today, in armwrestling there are many organizations and groups that develop our favorite sport discipline in their own way, but there is no clear vision of the system and armwrestling as a popular, self-sufficient and profitable sports discipline.

Many of you have taken a waiting position, hoping for a miracle. Let’s face the reality. As the President of WAC, PAL I receive a lot of messages asking what I, as one of the few armwrestling word officials, do to armwrestling hit the Olympic family.

You even can not imagine how difficult this question is and how difficult an answer is.
Anyone who was involved in the Olympic disciplines of sports states clear: our sports discipline will never be in the Olympic family. This does not mean that we should not try, but we are adults and should face the truth.

What does a sports discipline need to have to become an Olympic discipline?

1. The massive popularity and SportAccord registration.
2. Clear rules and popularity on sports channels. Armwrestling has neither one nor the other.
3. Youth Sports – young people training at different levels. Armwrestling has it only in some countries of the former Soviet bloc. For example, in Russia for the Juniors’ Nationals come up to 350 young people in age categories 14-16 y/o, 16-18, 18-20 y/o. In the United States – youth armwrestling is absent completely. In fact, it doesn’t exist.

With these initial parameters, we must not only stop the discussion on this topic, but just forget about the Olympics.

What can we do for our sports discipline or should we strive for in the Olympic movement?
The question is also difficult, but I’ll answer it.

America is a unique country for the development of any sport to the level of professional sports. There are many examples. For example UFC do not claim to be recognized Olympic Committee and member of the Olympic family, but in fact, it doesn’t really need it. Their athletes are real celebrities, they star in films, TV series, etc.

The second unique “sports discipline” is wrestling, which has two versions: WWE version – in the form of shows – and Olympic wrestling types: classic and freestyle wrestling. Many of you will hardly name a single Olympic champion in classical or freestyle wrestling, but all of US knows who the Rock, Senna, and other wrestling stars are.

This show with elements of wrestling made it possible for athletes to become the Stars of Hollywood scale.

NBA and Olympic basketball. What is cooler?
The answer is clear to everyone. NBA is much steeper than the Olympic basketball. Baseball and softball were in the Olympic movement. It seems to me that so far they ask themselves why they needed it. The Olympic movement completely useless for American baseball stars, truly.

My answer is clear: armwrestling needs to develop as a professional sport. We need to sit at a round table with all the organizations for negotiation. It is necessary to standardize the rules of, sports equipment, etc.

In the US, there are all the necessary mechanisms. And after some 5-10 years, we will see our athletes, as movie and television stars. This will bring children and youth, adults and the elderly’s, huge masses of people to arm wrestling.

And only then can we think about whether we go to the Olympic family, or it is not worth it.

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)

In case you are wondering why the site is named wada-ama.com, the answer is that in French language the name is Agence Mondiale Antidopage

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA; French: Agence mondiale antidopage) is an independent foundation created through a collective initiative led by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It was set up on November 10, 1999 in Lausanne, Switzerland, as a result of what was called the “Declaration of Lausanne”,[1] to promote, coordinate and monitor the fight against drugs in sport. Since 2002, the organization’s headquarters have been located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Lausanne office became the regional office for Europe. Other regional offices have been established in Africa, Asia/Oceania and Latin America. WADA is responsible for the World Anti-Doping Code, adopted by more than 600 sports organizations, including international sports federations, national anti-doping organizations, the IOC, and the International Paralympic Committee. As of 2014, its president is Sir Craig Reedie.

Initially funded by the International Olympic Committee, WADA now receives half of its budgetary requirements from them, with the other half coming from various governments throughout the world. Its governing bodies are also composed in equal parts by representatives from the sporting movement (including athletes) and governments of the world. The agency’s key activities include scientific research, education, development of anti-doping capacities and monitoring of the World Anti-Doping Code.

WORLD ARMWRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP 2014. DAY 1

The first significant event of the championship was a referee seminar. According to the World Armwrestling Federation head referee Leonard Harkless, the theoretical part of a seminar – tests and theory analysis – have been passed by 60 judges from around the world. Practice was passed by 46 referees. «Finally we have an ideal competition – said Leonard. – All fights for all four days will be hold by qualified referees, who has «senior» and «master» rank. This is what I sought for a long time. In addition, the fights will be held at eight tables».

General and very important topic of the Continental Congress was a matter of World Armwrestling Federation enter in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). A President of World Armwrestling Federation Assen Hadzhitodorov said: «This year we made two huge steps that lead us to the Olympic Committee. Firstly, we have become full members of the anti-doping committee. Secondly, this achievement and hard work of the Head Secretary of the World Federation Mircea Simionescu has allowed us to apply all the documents for membership in «Sport Accord». Our formal membership in this organization is a matter of time».

Also Assen Hadzhitodorov noted that because of these achievements a federation has an important responsibility and new requirements, according to which some doping tests will be made between competitions too. If the federation complies with the requirements of WADA and «Sport Accord», then it is likely that the armwrestling will enter the list of the World Games 2017.

In addition, the European Congress supported Assen Hadzhitodorov about the number of doping tests at the next European Championships – they will be 40, as in the last one. Also Marian Capla introduced the proposal to conduct team championships.

The North American Congress addressed the topic of doping control for athletes who have changed gender surgically because indicators of the level of certain hormones for these athletes do not always meet the standards.

An important theme of Asian Congress was the problem of World Championship 2015 in Malaysia. Representatives of Asian federation have expressed doubts about these events due to a number of reasons, depending on the Malaysian federation. But the decision rests with the World Federation, which Congress will take place on 16 September.
