Over the years, there were many attempts to popularize the sport of armwrestling. If we look only at the last 5 years, we had  which raised our hopes up, and when armwrestlers started to believe the show will do great things for the sport of armwrestling, the show got cancelled.

Now I feel that the same thing happens with WAL. Something is not right. What happened with WAL, made us appreciate more the promoters who dedicated their lives to promoting armwrestling events for more than 20 years.

When I don’t feel good about what happens in Armwrestling, I think (as a joke) about an ancient curse over this sport.

I believe it is safe to assume that this thing we call now Armwrestling was practiced (in a different form) from ancient Egyptian times. I know this was said before about armwrestling, although I didn’t see any proof, they had many Combat Sport Activities in Ancient Egypt.

Maybe, just maybe a pharaoh / god / cat got so upset over losing an armwrestling match that he put a curse on Armwrestling. 🙂

The curse could have been like: Armwrestling will never grow big, people will never find out that the great pharaoh / god / cat lost an armwrestling match. 🙂

16:23 Talk about armwrestling training / training methods compared to “ToddZilla” , nutrition / diet before an armwrestling competition.
30:07 Talk about steroids use and abuse, doping, drug testing. John said he didn’t know anything about steroids until his early 40’s. After that, he has been prescribed some drug by his doctor. He never felt the need to look into doping, and always gave a laugh when people said: you can’t be competitive as armwrestler unless you are juiced up and taking steroids. He had a laugh because he did it (being competitive without taking steroids) for 25 years, he knows it can be done, it is not a necessity to be a good armwrestler.
32:50 Alper Cosar asked John if he sees a correlation between the domination of the Eastern European armwrestlers (of the lower weight classes) and steroid abuse. John replied he believes there are more people interested in armwrestling in Europe right now than are interested in the sport in USA. Most of the good armwrestlers in USA are still the old timers. It is a new sport in Russia, where it was introduced just 20 years ago. John refuses to believe that they have a magic pill.
34:15 Craig Soubliere asked John if he will compete in Nemiroff 2015 / Zloty Tur 2015 this year. John replied that he has no plans to participate in anything associated with PAL. That is because PAL was appalling when John decided to sign with UAL, although John tried very hard to work with both sides UAL / PAL, and make them understand he can do both.
35:21 Craig asked if he will go to . John confirmed that he will go to A1 this year because he had a great time last year. As long as John doesn’t hurt himself at WAL, he is looking forward to at least have a better match with one of the top guys at A1. He feels really good right handed, his shoulder is getting a little better than last year. John said he is looking forward to see a match between and , because they both have very good hand control and they are very strong.
51:35 Alper asked John if he wants a rematch with and . John said he expects to be across the table with Devon in about 2 weeks (at WAL on JULY 4TH 2015 – LAS VEGAS, NEVADA) and he is excited about that. Alexey might be passed his abilities, but he might surprise him because he is a much better armwrestler than he was in 2004 during the making of Pulling John.

INTERVIEW: Steve Kaplan about WAL on ESPN, Game of Arms │ No Holds Barred

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Steve Kaplan, the president and commissioner of the World Armwrestling League (WAL).

It was announced earlier this month that ESPN in the U.S. has reached an agreement with WAL for exclusive rights to televise the 2014 World Armwrestling League Championship and the 2015 World Armwrestling League season. More details will be announced shortly, including the dates and times WAL events will be available on television and online.

The next WAL event will take place Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.

We spoke with Steve Kaplan by phone Tuesday.

Known as a business leader with many interests and accomplishments, he explained why he was attracted to the sport of arm wrestling.

“It is controlled aggression. It is intense. It is high testosterone,” he said. “It’s all about the combination of the physical and the psychological. And it’s matching speed, technique, and power, and utilizing them in a short burst of a time frame to really excel in this sport.”

Unlike contact and combat sports, he added, “It allows you to get all that done without the risks of life and limb. And it’s really an impressive thing by that.”

When arm wrestling was featured on the reality TV show “Game of Arms” earlier this year on the AMC network, he also saw the potential of this sport on television. AMC originally announced that there would be a second season of “Game of Arms”, but then reversed course and announced that the network would no longer develop unscripted shows, thus cancelling a second season.

By then, WAL had started running live events, and they went to ESPN, which led to the current agreement.

We also discussed more on the sport of arm wrestling, the appeal of watching these professional and elite athletes, the plans for running numerous events across the U.S. in 2015, the profit-sharing of WAL with their athletes, why “this should be a major sport”, plans for PED testing, and much, much more.

PULLERS: This is to confirm that Game of Arms will still shoot at WAL Atlantic City, NJ. As many of you know, AMC decided last week to shut down its reality TV business. The good news is there seems to be a lot of heat behind GOA, and it’s looking good that they’ll end up at an even BIGGER network soon! In the meantime, Undertow Films will produce an episode at the WAL tournament.

This announcement doesn’t have much effect on how the tournament will run, but it will mean the below guidelines about logos and releases DO STILL APPLY.

The WAL is excited to host Game of Arms at our event in support of the sport – it’s a great chance to give arm wrestling some much deserved exposure and promote all of you and the WAL.

**The Atlantic City event will start at NOON, until approximately 8pm.

Logo and Release Guidelines:
1. Because everyone in the venue could find themselves on camera for Game of Arms, ALL ATTENDEES will need to sign a one-off appearance release for Undertow Films (the show’s producer), to appear on TV. Additionally, everyone will need to sign the standard WAL appearance release. If you CANNOT sign a release to appear on an episode of TV, you will not be allowed into the venue.

2. GOA operates on a strict logo-control policy. ALL logos on apparel, bags, etc. or any signage other than WAL, will need to be covered or moved out of the line of sight of cameras. Please — WEAR LOGO-FREE CLOTHING. We mean plain clothes or a WAL shirt — no UnderArmour logo, no emblem for a cousin’s car dealership, no Nike swoosh — NOTHING should be on your shirt, hat, etc, for shooting purposes. Not even artwork from an Affliction T-shirt or something like it – it’s all copyrighted. ”

On 11 September 2014, AMC announced a second season of Game of Arms: ‘Game of Arms’ Renewed for Season 2 by AMC.
Yesterday 09 October 2014, less than 1 month after the initial announcement, AMC changed the direction and cancelled the second season of “Game of Arms” together with three new unscripted series it ordered in May.
1. AMC Exits Unscripted Programming To Focus On Scripted Series; ‘Talking Dead’ & ‘Comic Book Men’ To Continue
2. AMC Scraps Second Season of ‘Game of Arms,’ Other Shows as Cabler Reconsiders Unscripted Genre
We can only hope that Undertow Films – the Production Company of Game of Arms, will find a new TV Network interested to continue with season 2 of Game of Arms.

 talks about the reasons he joined . Devon also believes in  – WAL Founder & President, he believes that Steve will gonna make magical things happen in the sport.

Devon also talks about the new format of WAL, which will be tested at . In this new tournament format if you ever duck / lay down, or lose a match you will fight for 3rd and 4th place. There will be 2 pools which will gonna be seeded, the brackets will be seeded by . The 2 pools will be played in the standard double elimination tournament in which you will progress until you got into the semifinal. There you will get 2 guys that are undefeated in each pool on the – A side, and they will have a supermatch from which it will be determined the 1st and the 2nd place.  The armwrestlers from each pool who lost a match but they got to the semifinal in – B side, they will have a supermatch for the 3rd and 4th place.

Devon Larratt talks about his right arm. His right arm is stronger now than he was at WAL Las Vegas, but Devon expects it will be 2 more years until before he can say he is 100%, and he will not remember having surgery. But he is now fully willing to commit 100% to armwrestling as hard as he can in a tournament or in a supermatch, he is past the point where he fears re-injuring himself. He still has some spots where he is not fully comfortable and balanced, but he will get there and it will come a day when he will be again the best armwrestler in the world right handed.

Next Devon talks about VIDEO: Devon Larratt vs. Christian Binnie, +226 lbs LEFT FINAL │ WAL Las Vegas. He considers  3rd top armwrestler in North America after him and .

 asked Devon about his decision to enter the 225 lbs class at . Devon explains that for the last 15 years he ate as much as he could all the time, because he wanted to be as massive and strong as possible. He ate even more before a tournament, he wanted to stop, but he pushed himself. He normally weighs 235 lbs, and after WAL Las Vegas he started eating but not to a point where his guts are ripping apart. Devon made a joke about his wife  having a thing for , because she started to eat raw food and no meat like him. 🙂

Devon still eats meat when he goes out, but in the house they eat raw vegetables all the time, and the weight flew out of him. During this interview Devon said he is already 225 lbs and he noticed no impact on the strength.
